Now this is not to discount any other organizers in the world but here at THB we are about real life inspiration and discovery and in my personal world I discovered long ago that the reversed hanger tip does not work for me. The premise, for those of you that don’t know, is that you turn all the clothes in your closet backwards (hanger hook facing out instead of in) at the beginning of a season. As you wear your clothes you will hang them facing the normal way. At the end of the season, you are supposed to evaluate and remove any items that are still facing the original backwards direction. The thought is if you didn’t wear it all season you don’t need it.

Now, my world goes a little something like this. I enter my closet to determine what I want to wear for the day. I pick one thing…it doesn’t work…it sometimes gets hung on the door other times it gets thrown into a pile. Vary rarely does it get hung instantly back on the rod and when it does I am usually in such a hurry that it goes in facing the normal way. Hey, I’m being honest and that is what it is all about, being honest with yourself. If a tip doesn’t work for you don’t use it. Instead, find something that does work for you and your family and make it happen. For me, I would rather just pick a day or two each season to go through my closet using the following questions:
(1) Do I like it?
(2) Have I worn it?
(3) Does it fit?
If I answer No to any of these questions more than likely the item is removed from the closet. Occasionally, what happens is I may discover something that was hidden and now I have a sudden desire to wear it so it gets saved for one more season or it doesn’t fit and I decide to use it as a goal outfit. In those cases, I either put it in a more prominent spot or I hang it in the goal section of my closet.
The key to using this alternate system is to not save the same item for multiple seasons or not to save an entire wardrobe of items in your closet that don’t fit. In the case of the saved item, you need to somehow notate that it was saved so you realistically address your use of the item in the next season that you can wear it. In the case of the items that do not fit. Hang your favorite item in your closet in a designated location and then store the remaining items in a storage container with the date of when you stored it on it. This will let you know six months to a year from now if you are anywhere near getting into them, if not…be honest with yourself and get rid of them. Just remember, when you do lose the weight you will want a new wardrobe…which you would have earned.
For those who have the discipline to follow the backwards hanger tip, by all means use it. It is an easy way to evaluate your use or non-use of an item.
What other tips have you received/heard about that just didn’t work for you or your family and why?
